Precious Cargo: 2 MA Teens Caught After Stealing Car Containing Urn of Human Ashes
Two people were arrested at gunpoint after a foot chase through a marsh. The duo was wanted in a string of thefts and break-ins on Cape Cod, including allegedly stealing a vehicle containing an urn with human ashes.
Yarmouth police say Angel Gonzalez, 18, and his 15-year-old brother were apprehended and charged with 10 counts last week varying from larceny and nighttime breaking in of a vehicle near their home, according to the Cape Cod Times.
Police investigating the reported car theft learned that the urn contained the ashes of a former police officer that family had brought to the Cape. Another family member later spotted the car in traffic in the town of Hyannis, which is where police caught up with the alleged thieves after they bolted. The two brothers were nabbed in the shallow, muddy water near a local park, according to the report, which also stated one officer drew his pistol when the pair began waving their arms "frantically".
An alert police officer overheard the two during the booking process where the older of the pair tell his younger brother in Spanish not to talk, and that he would “cover for him".
The urn was returned to the family.
