Massachusetts man sentenced to 1 year in county jail for Durham crash that killed judge

DOVER - A driver accused of drunken driving in a crash that killed a retired judge will spend a year in the county jail for injuries he caused to his passenger.

Ryan Marchant, of Massachusetts, was driving on Route 4 in Durham a year ago when he crossed the center line and hit Bruce Larson's car head on.

Last month, Marchant was acquitted of negligent homicide but was found guilty of aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Police said Marchant was attempting to pass another vehicle on Route 4 when he collided with Larson's car.

Marchant was sentenced Tuesday in Strafford County Superior Court. Other conditions of his sentence include a $2,000 fine, participation in an impaired driver program, surrendering his license for two years and community service. He also has to refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs not prescribed to him during his three-year probation period.
