Massachusetts man charged with tying dog to a van, driving away

LOWELL, Mass. - Police have issued an animal cruelty criminal complaint against the owner of a 2-year-old pit bull for tying the dog a van and dragging it as he drove away.

On June 26, police received numerous complaints about a dog being dragged next to a van operating on Hildreth Street. Police stopped the van being driven by Timothy Nicholas, 60, of Lowell. Nicholas told police he tied the dog to the van and forgot it was there when he left Hovey Park and drove away.

Witnesses told police the dog initially ran alongside the van but could not keep up once the van picked up speed.

The dog suffered severe injuries to its paws, legs, and stomach. It was transported to Wignall Animal Hospital where it is still being treated.
