Massachusetts driver strikes tree in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH - A Massachusetts driver crossed the yellow line, and swerved across the opposite lane, smashed into a tree and spun to a stop at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday on 893 Elwyn Road.

There were four adult passengers in the car, a 2011 Honda Civic driven by Arifin Tanady of Lowell, Mass.

Witnesses believe Tanady may have dozed off before the crash.

Elwyn Road was closed for 45 minutes.

The front and side air bags deployed. All the passengers were wearing seat belts, and after being check out by Portsmouth Fire Department medics, they were released on scene.

The collision is still under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Officer William Dubois at the Portsmouth Police Department at (603) 610-7521.
