Mass. man dies, woman injured in collision on Route 3 in Holderness

HOLDERNESS - A head-on collision on Route 3 has killed a Massachusetts man and injured a woman from Alton.

Police say the accident happened shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday and that alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash.

Michael Higgins, 56, of Whitman, Mass. was headed south, driving a Toyota Camry, when he apparently crossed the center line and hit a Nissan Murano driven by Jennifer Heath, 46, of Alton.

Higgins was taken to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth where he later died of his injuries. Heath was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

Due to the collision, Route 3 was closed for roughly 4 hours, and traffic was diverted around the collision.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact TFC Bryan Plamondon at 223-8677 or email at
