Maple Month underway in New Hampshire
CONCORD - After a later than normal start, New Hampshire maple producers have begun tapping trees.
The 20th Annual Maple Month is underway and approximately 800 sugar makers around the state are ready and hopeful for a lucrative season.
"We had the coldest February on record and we didn't get any runs at all so we're looking forward to getting started, we're all very anxious. I know the guys up north are still another week or 10 days away but down in the southern part we're ready to go," said sugar maker Howard Pearl.
On Wednesday, Pearl and other members of the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association attended the first ever tree tapping ceremony on the Statehouse lawn.
House Speaker Shawn Jasper and Senator Sharon Carson participated in a friendly competition to see who's bucket produces the most sap. Results are not yet in.
