Maple month continues in New Hampshire

The Associated Press

CONCORD - Maple month continues in New Hampshire, with dozens of farms opening their sugar house doors to the public this weekend.

While last weekend was the state's officially designated "maple weekend," many producers are hosting special events throughout the month. This weekend, visitors to maple farms around the state can learn how to tap trees and turn the sap into syrup, and sample treats ranging from maple cotton candy to maple mustard. One producer even sets up a fountain of flowing syrup for visitors to dunk bits of French toast into.

Last year, considered a favorable season for maple syrup, New Hampshire produced 154,000 gallons of the sticky sweetener, or about 4 percent of the nation's total.

Vermont led the country in syrup production with 1.3 million gallons.
