Manchester shooting victim's daughter helping take back Granite Street neighborhood

MANCHESTER - Neighbors on Granite Street are tired for being known as people who live in a violence- and drug-ridden part of the Queen City.

On Wednesday, neighbors wanted to take back the neighborhood by cleaning up the streets after a shooting that happened just days ago.

427 Granite St. was the site of one of the Queen's City's most recent shootings.

Michael Pittman, 37, was shot and killed, and he left behind a wife and family.

But neighbors say life on Granite Street doesn't have to be this way.

“The kids - every day the kids see violence and see that when someone does something to you that you should take out a knife gun, shoot them and kill them,” said Heather Philipp, who organized the cleanup.

Pittman's daughter, Danielle Shaw, is just 13 years old.

She told NH1 News that Wednesday's cleanup is especially important to her - it honors her dad and will help protect other children.

“I don’t want other kids to be through what I’ve been through and I want them to have a better life,” she said.

Some of Manchester’s alderman came out to help with the cleanup and are in full support of making this neighborhood a cleaner, safer place for kids.

“You only hear the bad stuff about Granite Street, and it’s not as bad as what people make it out to be,” said Philipp.

Philipp is close to the Pittman family and says his daughters are slowly recovering, but when it first happened, her heart sank seeing Danielle hear the news for the first time.

“She had a look of shock on her face but when she saw the first thing she did was held out her arms and cried and hugged me,” said Philipp

But on Wednesday Danielle was able to tell NH1 News that every day is getting a little bit better.

The cleanup in honor of Pittman and taking back Granite Street will continue this weekend.
