Manchester school board to review 3 redistricting proposals at meeting tonight
MANCHESTER — School officials will hear three different redistricting proposals at tonight's board meeting, after weeks of preparation and receiving feedback from community members.
The Board of School Committee is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Manchester City Hall Aldermanic Chambers.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bolgen Vargas spent much of April presenting his revised feeder plan proposal, which received overwhelmingly negative reviews from parents.
The original plan would've sent Bakersville Elementary students to Parkside Middle School and West High School, while they currently attend Southside Middle School and Central High School. It also split Beech Street Elementary students, sending half to Southside and half to McLaughlin Middle Schools before the students would reunite at Central High School for 9th grade.
Vargas has since revised the plan he's proposing to the board Wednesday night so that Bakersville Elementary students will continue attending Southside Middle School and Central High School.
A second version of Vargas' plan also has all Beech Street students attending McLaughlin Middle School, eliminating the proposed split in the first plan.
But Vargas isn't the only one expected to bring ideas forward at the meeting.
At-large Board Member Richard Girard has proposed his own version of a vertical feeder program. His proposal is based on keeping neighborhoods together as much as possible. He explained the reasoning behind his proposal on his blog.
Board members have different ideas of what kind of redistricting plan will work best for Queen City families, though many have agreed the changes will likely be severe.
It is unclear whether or not the Board will actually vote on any of the proposals during Wednesday's meeting. A board member confirmed they need a simple majority of members in attendance to approve a plan.
The full agenda for the meeting, including all three proposed redistricting plans, can be found in this document.
