Manchester police officer, good Samaritan, help save people from fire

The Associated Press

MANCHESTER — A Manchester police officer and a good Samaritan helped evacuate people from a six-unit apartment building that was on fire.

Police said Officer David Labbe was patrolling the west side of the city early Wednesday when he saw a large cloud of smoke and called for help. He cleared apartments on all three floors at 624 Rimmon St.

Police said 39-year-old Raji Gupta of Manchester drove by and helped Labbe, carrying two small children from a third-floor apartment.

The building had heavy fire damage. No one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
