MANCHESTER - A Georgia man is charged with stealing a vehicle to visit his mother in the city.

Around 1 a.m. Monday, a police officer saw a black, 2001 Ford Ranger Pickup truck driving north on Elm Street approaching Bridge Street. The officer stopped the car after noticing it had no tail light.

After noticing an odor of marijuana the officer received consent from the driver, Kelvin Lawrence, of Ellwood, Ga., check the truck, police said. The officer found the remnants of a marijuana cigar in the ashtray, police said.

Another police officer arrived on scene and spoke with Lawrence, who said he stole the pick-up truck in Massachusetts earlier in the night, police said.

Police said Lawrence stole the vehicle in the area of Medford, Mass., and drove to Manchester, so he could visit his mother.

A check revealed Lawrence had an active warrant out of Merrimack County, police said.

Lawrence was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled drug.
