Manchester native in need of a new kidney looks to put her message on a billboard

MANCHESTER- In just four days, a GoFundMe Page has raised more than $4,000 to help Riley Crowder find a new kidney. Growing up in Manchester, she's struggled with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure for most of her life. Her mother donated a kidney to her when she was 12, totally changing her life.

“I could go to school dances, I could hang out with my friends, I wasn't always in the hospital,” Crowder said.

13 years later, Crowder learned her body was rejecting the organ. Now, at age 26, with the help of a friend who's putting up $5,000 of his own money, Crowder is looking to raise an additional $10,000 to put up a billboard on one of the busy highways in Manchester. She hopes it will increase her chances of finding a donor match.

“Hopefully cross our fingers like 3,4,5 or 60 people seeing this billboard and then coming forward and saying ‘You know what, I didn't know that I could even donate my kidneys, I just want to donate my kidney because it could save somebody’s life,’” Crowder said.

With a master’s degree, Crowder wants to get healthy enough to get back to her work as a Child Life Specialist. She says her job is to normalize the hospital environment for children and their families by explaining new diagnoses, preparing for procedures and tests in developmentally appropriate ways, and using play to distract from painful and potentially trauma-invoking experiences.

Crowder is interested in paired donation, which significantly increases the chances of finding a match for her or anyone else in need.

“This is not something that we should have to do and if there are ways to save more than just my life, why not do that,” Crowder said.
