Manchester aldermen vote yes to new traffic pattern for Walmart neighborhood

MANCHESTER— Residents hoping to relieve some stress caused by a new Walmart got some good news on Tuesday.

President Road will become one-way headed west, after an 8-5 alderman vote on Tuesday night. It is a move many hope will provide some relief to neighborhoods that have an overflow of increased traffic since a new Walmart opened on Gold Street last spring.

City aldermen voted Tuesday on this long-disputed issue, but City Mayor Ted Gatsas says that this is not a solution but just a "band-aid", according to the Union Leader.

Gatsas said he would pursue meetings with representatives from Walmart and Hannaford in the coming weeks.

President Road residents have spoken out regularly about how the high volume of traffic through their neighborhood became the favored route to Walmart when the retail giant opened its newest location back on April 20.

"I watch people going by sometimes speeding," Jack Moore, who has lived on the street for about a year, told NH1 in May, "It's no longer a quiet residential neighborhood that's for sure."
