Manchester aldermen pass teachers contract day before students return
MANCHESTER - The Board of Alderman twice overruled vetoes by Mayor Ted Gatsas during a meeting Tuesday night, eventually approving a new teachers contract.
The first vote to overrule passed 10-3 with one alderman abstaining.
Gatsas said that politics have taken an unfortunate role in the approval of the contract.
"Just because it's an election year, it doesn't give me, the mayor, a free pass to make the easy choice over the right choice," Gatsas said moments before his second veto of the contract.
A second vote overruled that veto with 11 in favor, two saying no and one abstaining.
Dozens of teachers demonstrated before the meeting, demanding a contract.
Gatsas first vetoed the contract on Aug. 4.
Manchester students return to school Wednesday.
