Man survives freezing water for hour after snowmobiles sink in Lake Winnisquam

GILFORD - 2 snowmobilers are lucky to be alive after falling through the ice on Lake Winnesquam.

One of the men was able to make it to shore where he asked a neighbor to call for help before returning to help the other male, who was still submerged, approximately 1500 feet off shore.

Emergency crews from several towns assisted with the rescue. Firefighters broke ice and waded through freezing water to reach the second victim. He was pulled to safety and transported to Lakes Region General Hospital with severe hypothermia. Officials say he was in the frigid water for almost an hour.

The Union Leader reports one of the men had admitted to "skimming", an illegal activity where the snowmobile is driven over open water.

Both snowmobiles are still submberged in approximate 130 feet of water.
