HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A man reportedly chasing children around a Southern California sports complex was shot and killed by two police officers.
Huntington Beach Police Chief Robert Handy told The Orange County Register that there were reports that the man was holding a bat and broken bottle before he was shot Thursday night.
The shooting occurred when the man ran up bleachers where there were parents. The police chief said there were about 200 people present.
The 45-acre park has eight softball fields and seven soccer fields as well as batting cages and playgrounds.
A girls' soccer coach who put himself between his players and the wild-eyed man said police had no choice but to shoot him.
The coach recalled that the man was 2 feet away from a woman when he raised the bottle as if to strike her.
He said that's when two officers fatally shot the man.
The mother of the killed man believes police used excessive force on her son.
Angela Hernandez said on Friday that her 29-year-old son had problems but sounded fine when she spoke with him on Thursday, hours before the incident occurred.
She said he was good-hearted and would never go after children.
