Man sentenced to 35 years to life for attempted murder of Allenstown teen

CONCORD (AP) — A New Hampshire man convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in a 2014 stabbing at Bear Brook State Park has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Kyle Buffum, sentenced Monday, was found guilty last month in Merrimack County Superior Court of accomplice to attempted murder and other charges in the stabbing of Andrea Halvorsen in Allentown's Bear Brook State Park.

Prosecutors say Buffum convinced his 18-year-old girlfriend to kill Halvorsen, her friend, before the two planned to commit a series of robberies and run away to Florida together.

The 24-year-old Buffum pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but jurors disagreed.

New Hampshire doesn't require a medical diagnosis for such a claim, which gives jurors the power to hold a defendant accountable for their actions.
