Man questions how family dog drowned in uncovered well in Durham

DURHAM — A dog drowned after falling into an uncovered 10-foot deep well Friday just off a trail used for walking, biking, and cross country skiing.

The Union-Leader reported the 13-year-old German shepherd Schultzy was found in the large concrete structure after going missing Tuesday. Scott Schaier said the dog escaped and thinks another animal may have caught her attention.

“We’re angry; we’re sad,” Schaier said. “It’s just tragic. She was our first kid.”

According to The Union-Leader, Stefany Shaheen and her husband, Craig Welch, of Portsmouth, own the land where the well is located. They have 20 acres of undeveloped property at 27 Durham Point Road. It recently went on the market for $395,000.

“We’ll make sure this never happens again,” Shaheen said.

Durham Deputy Police Chief Rene Kelley says that no crime was committed, and this is a civil matter.
