CONCORD — A man who spent 25 years in prison on sexual assault and burglary charges has been granted parole.

Gary Fecteau could be released on or after September 9. He had been dubbed the 'UNH rapist' because some of the incidents took place near the University of New Hampshire campus.

Fecteau told the state Parole Board on Thursday that he's worked hard to improve himself. He said he has a wife and a strong support network.

Fecteau was convicted in 1989 of stalking and raping or attempting to rape three people in Dover and Durham.

The board said Fecteau must transition to a work-release status at a halfway house by June a before moving to his own place. He is to have no contact with any victims or their families and will wear a GPS monitoring device for at least 90 days.
