Man indicted for alleged scam involving Seacoast churches

BRENTWOOD - A man wanted for allegedly scamming seven churches on the Seacoast has been indicted on theft charges.

Police say 44-year-old Joseph Grieco, of Methuen, Mass., asked the Kensington Congregational Church for money claiming he needed to identify his dead brother's remains in New York.

Several other churches say he also asked them for money. The indictment includes Exeter Presbyterian Church, the United Methodist Church and Trinity Episcopal Church in Hampton, the Trinity United Church and the Church of Christ in Seabrook and North Church in Portsmouth.

It's unclear how much he gathered but the indictment states it's in excess of $1,500.

Grieco failed to show up for court in October and now has a warrant out for his arrest.
