Man found sleeping in car charged with possession of heroin

MANCHESTER - A man sleeping in a car behind the courthouse on Chestnut Street was awakened by officers who say they found heroin in his pocket and in his backpack.

Officers on bicycle patrol say they observed the car parked behind the Hillsborough County Superior Court shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Inside the car, they saw a man sleeping on the front passenger seat, a backpack and a utility knife. The occupant was Alex Clancy, 25, of Manchester. Police say he stepped out of the vehicle and consented to a search where police found a capped hypodermic needle and small plastic bag with heroin in his front pocket. They then found another needle and about $80 worth of additional heroin and other drug paraphernalia in his backpack, police said.

Clancy was charged with drug possession and violation of bail conditions in connection with a case involving an unarmed robbery.

He was scheduled to be arraigned in the 9th Circuit Court of Manchester on Thursday.
