Man extinguishes porch fire in Somersworth, goes back to bed - it later reignites

SOMERSWORTH — Somersworth Police reported to a porch fire at about 6:45 a.m. Friday morning.

Edward King, of Raymond, woke up to smoke detectors going off in his home at about 4:30 a.m. and found a fire on the front porch of his condominium. King extinguished the fire, so he thought, and went back to bed.

Neighbors realized the fire had reignited and called 911 at about 6:40 a.m.

The fire extended from the front porch, up the side and the home, and into the basement through the oil pipe fill.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and used fans to remove the smoke.

King escaped from the home unharmed. There were no injuries during the incident.

Damage is estimated at $8,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Somersworth Fire and Police Departments.
