Man died after fiery crash in Canterbury

CANTERBURY - State police say one man died in a fiery crash on Shaker Road Sunday night.

Police were called around 8:30pm for a report of a car accident. When they arrived they say they found a Toyota Scion down an embankment, engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside.

Neighbors told police they rushed to the scene to try and pull the man from the vehicle after the crash but were unable to free him.

Police are still investigating but believe speed was a factor. They say the driver lost control, hit a tree and went down the embankment over a stone wall, where it came to rest before catching fire.

A passenger in the vehicle was able to escape and suffered minor injuries.

The name of the driver is not being released due to the extreme nature of the fire.
