Man arrested after Salem police say he crashed into utility pole after fleeing traffic stop


SALEM - A Massachusetts man is facing charges after trying to run from a traffic stop Thursday evening, Salem police said.

Police said Eric Cruz, 22 of Lawrence, Mass., was stopped for having a broken headlight, but fled the scene as an officer tried to stop him.

The police officer said he found 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer crashed into a utility pole and that all four passengers had fled by foot.

After calling in the K9 unit, three of the four passengers were taken into custody.

One of the female passengers was transported and admitted to Lawrence General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries from in the accident, and another female from Haverhill, Mass., was charged with resisting arrest.

Police said Cruz was operating the vehicle and told them he fled because he did not have a license and had been smoking marijuana.

Cruz was charged with disobeying an officer, reckless conduct, resisting arrest, conduct after an accident, transporting drugs in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled drug and driving after suspension.

Cruz also had an active bench warrant for his arrest.
