Man accused of scamming churches on Seacoast fails to show up for trial

BRENTWOOD - A warrant has been issued for a Massachusetts man accused of scamming churches in the Seacoast area.

Joseph Grieco, 44, of Methuen, Mass., failed to appear in court for his trial Thursday.

He was charged with theft by deception for allegedly telling a false story to Kensington Congregational Church about needing money to travel to New York to identify his deceased brother's remains. The church gave him $150.

Grieco told Kensington police he needed the money to pay off gambling debts, police said.

Several other churches in the Seacoast area also have come forward saying Grieco requested money from them.
