Maine looks to Berlin's model of ATV hub for economic boost

A north country city's embrace of ATV riders has caught the eye of a Maine town looking for an economic revival.

Berlin's involvement in a large network of off-road vehicle trails may be what is needed in Millinocket, Maine, which, like Berlin, saw an economic downturn following the collapse of the mill-based economy.

The Portland Press Herald is reporting the Maine town's interest in the Berlin model to help inject vitality into the region.

“Millinocket is like Berlin was 10 years ago,” said Pam Laflamme, Berlin’s community development director in the online report.

Berlin, with a population of about 10,000 people, is situated on the Androscoggin River. Millinocket, deep in Maine near Baxter State Park, has a population about half of Berlin.
