Madison man seriously injured in one of three snowmobile crashes in Pittsburg
PITTSBURG - A Madison man was seriously injured in an early morning snowmobile crash in Pittsburg, one of three snowmobile accidents that emergency responders dealt with on Saturday.
According to Fish and Game conservation officers, Richard Wheeler, 45, of Madison, had to be taken off the trail by a rescue snowmobile around midnight. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was airlifted by medical helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. The accident remains under investigation, but officials say unreasonable speed appears to have been a factor.
Two other calls came in later that morning - the first around 10:20 a.m. at the Deadwater Loop Road trail where a caller reported that a 14-year-old rider had crashed into a tree. Luke Wininger, of Berlin, Conn., was riding with friends and family and failed to negotiate a turn. His father said the snow dust had created poor visibility, which may have been a factor in the accident.
The third crash involved 30-year-old Bakr Ragragui, of East Boston, Mass. who riding a rental snowmobile when he lost control and the machine crashed off the side of the trail, injuring his passenger. The passenger was taken to the the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.
The accident remains under investigation but inexperience is believed to be a factor in the crash.
