Lost hiker found after cell phone provides rescuers her coordinates

CHESTERFIELD - Conservation officers with the NH Fish and Game Department used a woman's cell phone to locate her after she got lost in Pisgah State Park on Friday afternoon.

Conservation officers say Margaret Laird, 51, of Williamsburg, Mass., sent text messages to her husband after she got lost in the park. He called authorities around 12:30 p.m. but due to poor cell service in the area, they were unable to talk to her.

She moved to higher ground and finally was able to call 911, allowing the officers to get her GPS coordinates. At 2:40 p.m., a conservation officer on an ATV found Laird and was able to bring her back to the trail head of Kilburn Loop Trail on Route 63, where she'd parked.
