Londonderry family injured in early morning house fire

LONDONDERRY - A family of five living on Stony Point Drive were taken to the hospital early Saturday morning with minor injuries after a fire started in their kitchen and spread.

Firefighters say the call came in around 2:30 a.m. with the fire having started in the kitchen area of the first floor. The flames were extinguished in about a half hour but the first floor was heavily damaged, and the flames spread through the side of the house into the attic.

All the family members were taken to Parkland Medical Cente,r and the Red Cross is now assisting the family in locating alternative housing.

"Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers have met with the residents and have ensured everyone has a safe place to sleep and has food, clothing and other essentials," spokesman Lloyd Ziel said in a news release.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
