Londonderry dog owners face animal abuse charges after pup found in 'appalling' conditions

LONDONDERRY - Two dog owners were in court Friday to face animal abuse charges after neglecting their 3-year-old Shih Tzu named "Puppy."

Police found Puppy on Thursday after getting reports of neglect.

Jada Demas and Jennifer Moscardini, appeared before a judge Friday morning and were charged with one count of failing to get the dog vaccinated and registered, and three counts of cruelty to animals.

“I went to bed crying," said Alice Hurrell of Derry, after seeing photos released by police. "It had never been groomed, its hair covered its poor little eyes and it was scratching its eyes.”

The lack of grooming was just one of a laundry list of issues when police found Puppy.

Puppy has been checked by a vet at the Manchester Animal Hospital as of Friday, and is doing much better according to police.

Demas and Moscardini have no criminal histories prior to the abuse charges and are being held on $2,000 personal recognizance.

Neighbors and dog owners alike are shocked.

“Never heard any barking or anything like that, no," neighbor Jim Lepine said. "I’m floored to see those pictures and to think that it was going on next door is just like really appalling for me.”

“Absolutely horrified," Christine Haynes, of Derry said. "I couldn’t believe someone would let a dog go for that long and not take care of it.”

The pair had been evicted from their apartment at 112 Rockingham Road because they had stopped paying rent, the landlord said.

When she said she went to make sure that the two were gone, she found Puppy.

“When I opened the door the whole thing smelled," Landlord Emily Pan said. "Everything was so filthy.”

Pan told NH1 News that garbage and old food were scattered through the apartment, and according to a police officer, even the dog’s water bowl was covered in a brown film.

Demas and Moscardini are due back in court on Mar 15, and aren't allowed to have any pets until then.
