Lightning starts garage fire in Somersworth

SOMERSWORTH - A garage was destroyed after lightning struck it Sunday evening.

Bob and Julie Bregy were home at the time of the fire, which started at approximately 4:45 p.m. Julie hurt her knee and ankles as she tried to escape to safety.

"All of a sudden, we just heard this big ba-boom, and, I mean, we ran into the trailer. We didn't know what was going on," Bregy told NH1 News Monday.

The fire destroyed Bob Bregy's pick-up truck, and a Lincoln Navigator that was sitting in front of the garage. Sentimental items were also destroyed.

Julie Bregy had saved her wedding dress, so her niece could wear it. She also had many items left behind by her mother, which she wanted to sort out.

"We lost a lot of stuff. A lot of memories of my mom, and that's upsetting," Julie Bregy said.

Somersworth Fire Chief Keith Hoyle said the garage was one of two places on the property that was struck. Lightning also hit a large tree.

Hoyle said the couple was lucky fire did not spread to their house, which is located less than 10 feet away from the garage.

In all, the lightning strike caused over $30,000 worth of damage.
