OAK BLUFFS, MARTHA'S VINEYARD- Licences to operate for three moped rental shops on Martha's Vineyard are on hold after their requested waivers requiring dedicated space for further rider training was denied.

According to the Cape Cod Times, the training hinges on providing renters with a separate track to familiarize them with how to operate the motor bikes and stems from an incident involving two New Hampshire women who were injured riding one last summer.

A local group called Moped Are Dangerous Action Committee formed and filed complaints with the town of Oak Bluffs against three rental companies that operate on the island- Ride On Mopeds, King of Rentals MV, and Islands Hoppers. Since then town officials and others have wrangled over the existing practice of moped renters using town roads for training and the issue of creating a separate area for rider instruction.

Renting mopeds is popular with tourists who frequent the island during the summer. Safety surrounding moped rentals has been an issue on the island for many years. The pair were riding a moped rented from Ride On Mopeds.
