LEADING OFF: Kershaw's scoreless streak; Cards-Royals

The Associated Press

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

The Cardinals host the Royals in a matchup of the top records in baseball. John Lackey (8-5, 2.90 ERA) gets the ball for major league-leading St. Louis in the opener of a season-long 11-game homestand. Chris Young (8-5, 3.03 ERA) starts for the Royals in the makeup of a June 14 rainout.

Clayton Kershaw takes a 20-inning scoreless streak into his start against the light-hitting Mets. Impressive, but the NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner doesn't even have the longest streak on his own team. Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke has gone 43 2-3 innings without allowing a run. He starts Friday night.

Jeff Samardzija (6-5, 4.08 ERA) makes what could be his final start for Chicago when the White Sox open a four-game series at Cleveland. The right-hander, who is eligible for free agency after this season, is a possible trade target ahead of the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Trevor Bauer (8-6, 4.03 ERA) pitches for the Indians, who have won three of four.

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said before Hisashi Iwakuma's last start the he expected his Japanese star to go 10-0 in the second half now that he's healthy. Iwakuma's off to a good start. He was sharp in a win over the Yankees on Saturday. With trade speculation swirling, David Price takes the mound for Detroit in the Tigers' final home game before the deadline.

Ervin Santana faces his former team when the Twins face the Angels. The right-hander played for Los Angeles from 2005-2012, making 117 starts at Angel Stadium. This will be his first start there as a visitor.

Third baseman Yunel Escobar sustained what appeared to be a hand or wrist injury while swinging the bat against the Mets on Wednesday. X-rays were negative but Washington will not know the extent of the injury until Escobar has further tests. The Nationals already have four position players and Stephen Strasuburg on the DL.
