Lawyers for Merrimack man accused of murdering wife want statements to police withheld

The Associated Press

MERRIMACK (AP) - Lawyers for a Merrimack man charged with killing his wife are seeking to suppress statements he made to police.

Joseph Lawrence is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, 61-year-old Darlene Lawrence. She was found dead in their Merrimack home on April 30.

Attorneys say statements 63-year-old Joseph Lawrence made before trial weren't voluntary due to his mental and physical state after the shooting.

Police said Lawrence initially told them that his wife's gun accidentally discharged after an argument. They said Lawrence later said he shot his wife intentionally.

His lawyers say Lawrence made the statements before his Miranda rights were read.
