STODDARD — A 5-alarm brush fire in Stoddard quickly spread out of control Thursday just hours after crews had finished mopping up another brush fire from Tuesday. Firefighter Warden Jo Sarcione says between the brush fire Sunday and now this massive forest fire Thursday, he's never seen anything like it.
"This fire just blew up. There is indication right now there was two bikes that were running around setting fires and were seen doing that," Sarcione said.
State Police and the State Fire Marshal's office are on scene investigating the possible arson.
Dozens of crews from around the state are on scene. At last check, close to 40 acres had burned as crews try to contain the fire before nightfall.
Some homes in the Juniper Hill Road area were evacuated as a precaution and more evacuations could be on the way.
The Vermont/New Hampshire chapter of the American Red Cross is on scene assisting crews.
