CONCORD - A Goffstown Republican lawmaker touched off a firestorm over a permit to carry a concealed gun pointing at police officers who fail to speak up but don't believe these permits make us safer.
State Rep. John Burt said "Hitler's men remained silent also.’’
When a Facebook supporter responds saying, "there's a difference between troops committing genocide’’ and not speaking up, Burt defends making the comparison.
"Well people kept saying to me, John, they are only doing their job and they don’t want to lose their job. Well that’s what Hitler’s people said,’’ Burt told NH1 News during a telephone interview.
Burt’s comments came the same day Gov. Maggie Hassan vetoed the bill to repeal a concealed carry permit and pointed to the attorney general, state police management and local police chiefs who all support the mandate.
He defended the analogy but said it was only for effect.
"I’m not comparing them to Hilter’s people at all,’’ Burt explains.
The head of the liberal Granite State Progress said Burt was way out of line and wrong on the facts.
"John Burt represents the worst of the worst when it comes to elected officials, and he should resign - but he won’t because his ego is too big,’’ Zandra Rice-Hawkins said.
Burt said no cop here told him permits should be done away with, but he claimed some have in Vermont, where Burt grew up.
Since its 1777 Constitution, Vermont gun owners have had the right to carry concealed.
"The policemen that do all the work they do really support this but they are being told not to say anything,’’ Burt said.
Maine Gov. Paul LePage got rid of permits in his neighboring state Tuesday. Local police and sheriffs wanted them kept in place, but Maine State Police did not.
"Unless New Hampshire wants to look at strengthening our public safety laws in other ways, let’s keep this strong public safety law on the books,’’ Rice-Hawkins added.
