Laconia police await approval on a grant intended to help purchase rifles for officers

LACONIA — The Laconia Police Department has received a federal grant to purchase Colt M4 Law Enforcement Carbines for specific officers on duty.

The department was awarded $15,714 by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in order to purchase 15 semi-automatic, .223 caliber rifles, along with slings, magazines and other accessories, according to the The Laconia Daily Sun.

Each officer will be assigned a rifle that is not to be shared. While on duty, the rifle is expected to be mounted in between the seats of the cruiser.

When the specific officer goes off duty, the rifles will remain at the station.

With the recent police shootings, the guns are intended for use in an active shooter situation, only.

The City Council has scheduled a public hearing on the acceptance of the grant to purchase the rifles during its meeting on Monday, Aug. 8.
