Laconia police arrest man who threatened woman with a stick and demanded police shoot him

LACONIA - A man who threatened a woman and then a police officer by waiving around a length of wood demanded that police shoot him before he was taken into custody.

Police say the disturbance was reported at 184 Union Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Friday night.

Police say they arrested Eric Sleeper, 45, of 188 Union Avenue and took him to Lakes Region General Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Sleeper allegedly grabbed a woman by the neck while threatening her with the wooden object. When police arrived, he reportedly advanced on the officer waving the stick and demanded the officer shoot him. He then dropped the stick and the officer attempted unsuccessfully to subdue him using a Taser.

Sleeper was eventually taken into custody and charged with criminal threatening, simple assault, resisting detention and breach of bail. He is being held at the Belknap County jail after refusing bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at Laconia District Court.
