Laconia City Council approves federal grant for police to purchase new rifles

LACONIA - The Laconia City Council voted Monday to approve the use of a federal grant for the police department to purchase new rifles.

The department was awarded $15,714 by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in order to purchase 15 semi-automatic, .223 caliber rifles among other accessories needed.

A small group held signs before the meeting, protesting the "militarization of local police," but they would not speak to television reports.

The protesters did not attend the meeting, and no one spoke during the public hearing on the matter.

Police tell NH1 News they already have these weapons and their officers are trained on them. This will bring the departments total of this particular firearm up to 36.
