L.L. Bean to hire CEO outside of family

FREEPORT, Maine - For the first time in the company's history, L.L. Bean has hired a CEO from outside of the family.

Steve Smith, who has been working retail in China for Yihaodian, is coming back to the U.S. to be the head of the Maine-based outdoor company.

Smith, who spent his career in Portland before moving overseas, is excited to return to be head of L.L. Bean.

Smith told WCSH, "I'm really comfortable in the physical retail world in omni and multichannel, and those are all the areas where bean is growing."

Smith will replace Chris McCormick, who plans to retire as CEO in January.
