Kindness for Maddi: Strafford mom commemorates daughter by asking to share acts of kindness

STRAFFORD - A mother lost her daughter more than a year ago, and she created a Facebook event inspired by her loss.

"I know that her story is not - it doesn't have to end on that day at 8:53 when she left us." Lori Weeks said.

Weeks was talking about her daughter Maddi. The 7-year-old died in a 2014 car accident.

Her mom said she had a huge heart. She always expressed love and kindness to others.

"She championed a letter-writing campaign for a little girl who was sick with cancer," Weeks said. "Without telling me, she went to school and asked all of her friends in second grade, all of her girl-scouts to write these letters. We ended up sending like 200 letters down."

Weeks said she read a book called "Dear Cheyenne" which mentions world kindness day.

"Parents and family members are encouraged to spread kindness in honor of the people they lost," she said. "I read about that in the book, and I thought Maddi would want us to do this."

Months after Maddi's death, Weeks started a Facebook event on World Kindness Day. She asked friends and family members to do a small act of kindness in honor of her daughter, and post what they did to the page. She never expected the reaction she got.

"People continued to do things and wanted more Maddi cards," she said.

"Maddi Cards" are handed out during an act of kindness to explain why the act was done.

They have traveled to 22 states and four countries.

Weeks has since made another page called Kindness for Maddi - it now has almost 1,500 members.

She hopes others can continue to spread kindness like Maddi would have wanted to do.

"When you do something small, whether it's as little as paying a toll or doing a bigger project you have no idea what your impact on somebody can be," she said. "It doesn't matter if you've lived on this earth for one year, or seven years, seven months and 27 days - your heart can affect hundreds and thousands of other people."
