Kibby fights against motion to unseal documents from kidnapping, rape case

GORHAM — A New Hampshire man who kidnapped and repeatedly raped a 14-year-old girl while holding her captive for nine months has requested that courts stop the trial court from unsealing documents from his case.

Nathanial Kibby, 35, kidnapped the girl in 2013 after she accepted his offer of a ride home from school. Kibby pleaded guilty in May to several charges and was sentenced to 45 to 90 years in prison.

The trial court wanted to make public letters that were written to the court by Kibby while his case was pending and a number of motions, some pertaining to his counsel, according to the Berlin Daily Sun. Kibby's counsel objected to the unsealing of the documents. Kibby and his lawyers are still urging that these five letter remained sealed.

The court has agreed to hear the case and issued an order giving Kibby's lawyers until Nov. 7 to file its' brief. The state has until Dec. 22 to respond.
