Kevin Landrigan: NH House Speaker's race heats up; political elite tab Gene Chandler
CONCORD - Some have installed ex-House Speaker William O'Brien as the favorite to take back the gavel but some of the state's political elite got behind GOP rival Gene Chandler for the top House post.
U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH, former Governors John H. Sununu and Steve Merrill along with ex-Congressman Charles Bass all backed Chandler in a letter his speaker's committee released Thursday.
Chandler also won the backing of two, other former House speakers, Douglas Scamman and Donna Sytek.
In an endorsement letter, the GOP leaders stressed Chandler would strike the right tone in taking over the House that voters gave back to Republicans in last week's elections.
"Now, we have the opportunity and responsibility to make great things happen for the people of New Hampshire-to do the things we promised we would do, to communicate effectively with voters and the media and to prove that Republicans are the right choice to govern New Hampshire for years to come,'' they wrote.
"That is why it is so important to support Gene Chandler for speaker of the House. We know that Gene will respect all Representatives, listen to your views and unite the caucus in taking on the fight against irresponsible spending, big and ineffective government, and anti-jobs policies which hurt Granite State families.''
House Republicans will meet to make their choice next Thursday.
