Kevin Landrigan: Manchester legislator Steve Vaillancourt calls Rep. Ann Kuster 'ugly as sin'
CONCORD - An outspoken, Manchester Republican legislator touched off a firestorm of commentary by describing on his blog Congresswoman Annie Kuster as "ugly as sin'' and that "looks matter in politics.''
Rep. Steve Vaillancourt compared the first-term Democrat Kuster to a "drag queen,'' in his NHInsider blog last Friday night, and said she would probably lose to Republican nominee Marilinda Garcia who he wrote was "truly attractive."
"Let's be honest," Vaillancourt writes. "Does anyone not believe that Congressman Annie Kuster is as ugly as sin? And I hope I haven't offended sin. If looks really matter and if this race is at all close, give a decided edge to Marilinda Garcia,'' Vaillancourt wrote.
Vaillancourt has often attracted attention and sometimes derision for his colorful blog posts. The maverick legislator has often battled with House speakers from both political parties and boasts that three different speakers have removed him from policy committees.
"I've promised myself for years not to use this anecdote, but after seeing the story about the seven to ten point boost for the attractive, the story has political relevance,'' Vaillancourt wrote.
"Annie Kuster looks more like a drag queen than most men in drag.''
Garcia last night issued a statement condemning the remarks.
"State Rep. Vaillancourt's recent comments about Rep. Ann Kuster are sexist and have absolutely no place in political discourse. Both Rep. Kuster and I have experienced this unfortunate reality of being a woman in politics,'' Garcia said.
"I hope that as time moves forward and more female candidates run for political office around the country, people will focus on the content of our ideas rather than what we wear and how we look."
Kuster has yet to respond to requests for comment.
