Kevin Landrigan: House Speaker Shawn Jasper is under seige

New House Speaker Shawn Jasper knew this was coming. You don't win the gavel with just a handful of Republican votes and expect the party elders to like it.

"I know there are people out there with the long knives. I am aware of that; I made myself a target,'' Jasper sasid.

Late Monday night the party's Executive Committee took the unprecedented step of a censure, a scolding in writing accusing Jasper of putting quote personal ambition'' unquote above party loyalty.

Former Republican Chairman Steve Duprey said there's lingering bitterness ex-Speaker Bill O'Brien was the Republican choice but Jasper snatched the job away with his third-ballot upset.

"Oh I absolutely wish we had elected Bill O'Brien speaker because he was the Republican nominee, absolutely without question,'' Duprey said.

The tribal fallout continued Tuesday with the House Republican Alliance and a band of 80, pro-O'Brien House members huddling to pick their own leaders.

They vow to force Jasper to accept an elected majority leader and not Representative Jack Flanagan who Jasper has named.

Duprey predicts once all Republicans confer on their agenda which starts today healing of the bruised egos can begin.

"I will bet substantively on issues there is probably 90 percent agreement within all the Republican members,'' Duprey added.
