Kevin Landrigan: Gun possession allowed at NH House again

CONCORD - House Speaker Shawn Jasper got his post with Democratic votes but they parted company on a key policy change today.

The Hudson Republican went along with colleagues that wanted to bring back permission of the public and lawmakers to carry concealed weapons on House property including hearing rooms in the Legislative Office Building.

After nearly a half century where it was illegal, Republicans taking control after the 2010 election had bowed to the state's gun lobby and permitted possession.

Two years later, House Democrats took back control and re-imposed the ban.

House Democratic Leader Steve Shurtleff says this sends an awful message to the fourth grades who visit the State House.

Jasper says he consistently has backed the rights of gun owners and as long as the public and lawmakers behave, this is the right thing to do.
