Keene veteran convicted of sexually assaulting 7 children sentenced to 20-40 years

KEENE - A Keene man was sentenced 20 to 40 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting seven children.

Steven Velez appeared at Cheshire Superior Court where victims and their families made sure their voices were heard.

"The boogieman is not some stranger lurking in the shadows at night," One mother of a victim said. "They're people we have let in our homes. They are Steven Velez."

Velez apologized for saying he was sorry for hurting the people he loved and cared about and claiming his actions were brought on by a rough childhood and time served in the military.

"There is only one person who bears any inkling of responsibility for what took place," Judge John Kissinger said. "And that person is headed to where he belongs, New Hampshire State Prison, for a very long time."
