Keene elementary students make history after winning top NH Class Act Video awards

KEENE — Wheelock Elementary School made history when two fourth-grade classes won the top New Hampshire Class Act Video awards.

Hannah Trombly and Debbie Sawyer's classes each submitted a video answering the question, “why should people come to N.H. and what makes it special?” as a part of the contest.

During a surprise announcement Wednesday, students learned from Victoria Cimino, director of Travel and Tourism in N.H., that Trombly's class won the grand prize, while Sawyer's class received the runner-up spot.

"We didn't know when we were going to get the results, so it was nice to have it in front of the whole school," said Aubrey Averey, a student in Trombly's class.

The N.H. Division of Travel and Tourism has run this contest for six years, but this was the first time the same school won the grand and runner-up prizes.

"A school has never placed first and second in the same competition before," Principal Patricia Yoerger told the students. "We have a record now in the state because no other school has done this before."

Schools from all over the Granite State submitted videos for this year's awards. Out of the 20 videos, the top two came from Wheelock.

"I'm really proud of them; proud of their work and I think the kids will be talking about if for a longtime," Yoerger said.

For coming in first, Trombly's class received a trip up to the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world's first mountain climbing train and one of New Hampshire's oldest tourist attractions. The students will receive luxury transportation to the Cog provided by Premier Coach.

"We're just really excited," said student Owen Watkins. "We were so surprised," added student Makayla Evans.

Sawyer's class also gets to enjoy a field trip for placing second. They will be going to the Remick County Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth.
