Judge dismisses arson charges against Dover man determined incompetent to stand trial
DOVER — A judge has dismissed two arson charges against a Dover man after determining he was not competent to stand trial.
According to Seacoastonline, Shawn Hoyt, 21, was accused of setting two fires - one in 2014 that destroyed a home at 28 Broadway and one in 2012 at a multi-family residence on Lincoln Street that was extinguished before firefighters arrived.
The reasons why Hoyt is not competent to stand trial are sealed and confidential in Strafford County Superior Court. After the charges were dismissed without prejudice, Hoyt left the court with his family.
In an e-mail to Seacoastonline, Deputy County Attorney Alysia Cassotis said, “Procedurally, when a defendant is found incompetent to stand trial […], there are alternative routes that the state is permitted to explore and pursue, but I am unable to provide any case specifics as they are confidential in nature.”
