Joe Knows: 5 lightning myths you need to know are false

NH1 Chief Meteorologist - NH1.com

When it comes to lightning safety there is only one thing you need to know: When thunder roars, go indoors. It’s catchy, but also very true. Lightning is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. The extreme heat causes the air around it to rapidly expand and explode. The sound of the exploding air travels out in waves, creating the sound of thunder. The general rule that we use is that if you can hear thunder, you’re within striking distance of the storm and you need to go inside a building or vehicle immediately.

Unfortunately, there are many myths surrounding lightning and safety.

It is time to debunk them.
